Changes in your body

Most likely you may notice there has not been any significant weight gain since last week. Around 37 weeks, the frequency of Braxton Hicks contractions may increase. Your doctor may check if your Mucus plug is expelled in preparation of delivery.

A Mucus plug blocks the opening of the Cervix to prevent bacteria from entering your Uterus. Passing a Mucus plug is a sign that your Cervix is opening as your body begins to prepare for delivery. Keep in mind that labor could be hours, days, weeks or even a month away as your Cervix opens gradually over time.

Towards the end of pregnancy, you may be feeling quite huge and uncomfortable. Meanwhile you may begin to have some swelling in your feet and chances are that you are leaking Colostrum also. But relax—it won’t be long now before you hold your little one in your arms. In the weekly visits, your doctor will continue to check your blood pressure, protein or sugar in urine, baby’s heartbeat and position, and will also monitor any weight gain or loss in you.

Your growing baby

Congratulations! Now your baby will be considered full term, even though there are 3 weeks to go. Your baby may have a good amount of hair on his/her head during week 37. Now your baby weighs around 2.7–2.9 kg and measures approximately 50 cm from head to toe.

By week 38, your baby is continuing to grow and weighs around 3 kg. Except for brain and lungs, your baby’s organs are fully developed and functioning. These organs will start functioning once your baby comes out from your Uterus but full maturity will reach during childhood. Now you may get an idea about the color of your baby’s eye especially if she/he has brown eyes.

Things to consider

If your baby is not in the head down position yet, there may be a possibility of a Breech birth. Breech position is when your baby is bottom-down position in your Uterus. Do not panic, there are various ways that are available to turn your baby—both natural and medical techniques. Discuss with your doctor about the delivering options.

If you experience sudden swelling in your hands, feet, face or ankles, inform your doctor as you may be developing pregnancy-induced Hypertension.

As you get closer to D-day, you may be feeling restless and anxious to see your little one by now. Basically you are in waiting game now. Don’t get too much worried about labor. Knowing more about what to expect during labor may help.

Tip of the week

With the birth of your baby only a couple of weeks away, now is a good time to discuss with your partner about the birth control options after your baby’s birth. Remember, there are some birthcontrol methods that cannot be used if you are breastfeeding. For more information on birth control methods, click here.
